Arsenal go TOP of the league title with nervy win over Newcastle

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table after a tremendous early strike from Eberechi Eze secured a crucial three points in front of a tense Emirates Stadium crowd.

This was a game Arsenal simply had to win. It was the first of five matches in what feels like a decisive shootout for the title with Manchester City.

Newcastle made the brighter start and created the first opportunity through Bruno Guimarães, but his effort was well blocked. Moments later, Arsenal found their breakthrough. A short corner routine fell to Kai Havertz, who showed great composure to hold the ball before laying it perfectly into the path of Eze. The midfielder made no mistake and swept the ball beautifully into the far corner.

From that point, Newcastle responded well. Joe Willock, Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn all tested Arsenal from distance, but their efforts were either blocked or comfortably dealt with. At the other end, Noni Madueke had a golden opportunity to double the lead, but chose to shoot from range rather than square the ball, and his tame effort was easily gathered by Nick Pope.

Arsenal were then dealt a blow as Kai Havertz was forced off through injury, with Viktor Gyokeres introduced in his place.

The second half brought further concerns for the hosts. Goalscorer Eze was also forced off, with Gabriel Martinelli coming on in his place. Chances remained limited in the early stages, with Madueke again trying his luck from distance, only to produce another routine save.

Arsenal allowed the game to become increasingly nervy. There was a noticeable lack of intensity and creativity in the final third, with promising positions wasted due to a reluctance to take risks. Martin Odegaard did manage to produce a moment of quality, lifting a superb ball over the top for Gyokeres. Pope misjudged his intervention and brought down the Swede, but only a yellow card was shown.

Newcastle came close to an equaliser with ten minutes remaining, as Yoane Wissa fired high and wide from a promising position. Arsenal responded immediately, with Bukayo Saka seeing his effort deflected behind for a corner, before Odegaard forced a fine save from Pope.

In the end, it was a vital victory that keeps the Gunners firmly in the title race with four games remaining.
