Arsenal advance to the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season after holding off a tricky Sporting Lisbon side at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side came into this game with a crucial one nil lead courtesy of a last gasp winner from Kai Havertz last Tuesday in Lisbon.
There was a nervous feel around the Emirates Stadium after Bournemouth came here just four days ago and took home all three points which dented the gunner’s league title hopes.
Arsenal came out in the first half on the front foot with Eberechi Eze showing some promise but no real threat was created. Viktor Gyokeres saw a decent glimpse of goal but his effort sailed high and wide of the Sporting net.
The visitors were limited to very little but did manage to hit the woodwork in the first half. Leandro Trossard also struck the post late in the second half with a free header at the back post from a Max Dowman corner.
Sporting showed signs but in the end they failed to pierce the resilient Arsenal back line and the hosts sealed a nervy stalemate which was all they needed for a spot in the last four.
